St Martins Battery, Dover, Kent

Overview
St Martin's Battery, a key coastal defence on the Western Heights of Dover, boasts a history from the Victorian era to World War II. It was first built between 1871 and 1874 to defend the port against potential French invasion, initially housing powerful 10-inch rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns. However, as warfare technology advanced, these original armaments became obsolete, and the battery was disarmed and fell into disuse around 1908. The battery found a second life during the 1940 invasion crisis in World War II. The original Victorian gun pits were hastily modernised with concrete and brick covered emplacements to house three effective 6-inch breech-loading (BL) guns. These cannons were operational by May 1941, playing a crucial role in defending the harbour during the conflict until the threat receded. The guns were eventually removed in 1947, marking the end of the battery's operational history. Today, the site is managed by the Western Heights Preservation Society and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership, who have cleared the area for public access. Visitors can explore the preserved Victorian brickwork alongside the wartime concrete modifications, gaining insight into the site's dual-era military significance. More information is available on the Dover-Kent Western Heights website.
