Overview

Reculver Towers, located on the Kent coast, occupy a site of significant strategic history, beginning as the 3rd-century Roman fort of Regulbium. Built to defend against Saxon raids, the fort's ruins still encircle the site. In 669 AD, the land was repurposed for a Saxon monastery, and a church dedicated to St Mary was constructed at the fort's center using reclaimed Roman masonry. The iconic twin towers were added during a major 12th-century remodeling of the medieval church. Local legend often refers to them as "The Two Sisters," attributing their construction to an abbess honoring her sibling. By the late 18th century, severe coastal erosion threatened the structure, leading to the church’s partial demolition in 1809. However, the towers were preserved by Trinity House to serve as a vital navigational landmark for mariners navigating the Thames Estuary. Today, the towers are managed by English Heritage and stand as a dramatic ruin within Reculver Country Park. As of January 2026, the exterior and surrounding Roman fortifications remain accessible to the public, while the towers themselves are scheduled to reopen for the 2026 visitor season on April 1, 2026. The site remains a protected Scheduled Ancient Monument, blending military history, medieval architecture, and coastal conservation.
