Overview
The Hob Hole (often referred to locally as the Hob Goblin caves) is a small, atmospheric cave located at the base of the cliffs in Sandsend, just north of Whitby. It’s a spot where local folklore and coastal geology collide. The Legend of the Hob According to North Yorkshire folklore, the cave was the home of a Hob—a mischievous but occasionally helpful brownie or goblin-like creature. The Cure: Local legend says that if a child had whooping cough (historically called "kink-cough"), their parents would carry them into the cave and call out: "Hob-hole Hob! My bairn’s got kink-cough, tak’ it off!" The Personality: Like most Hobs, the creature was said to be easily offended. If you treated him well, he might help with chores; if you annoyed him, he’d disappear or cause chaos.
