Title:

Herne Bay Central Bandstand

Price:

£50.00

Overview

Built in 1924 by engineer H. Kempton Dyson, the Herne Bay Central Bandstand was a pioneer in British architecture as one of the country's first major reinforced concrete structures. Originally designed to straddle the beach on pillars, it allowed the tide to flow beneath the stage. In 1932, its iconic Art Deco frontage was added, creating an enclosed auditorium that could hold 1,000 spectators and shielding them from the coastal winds. During its "Golden Age" in the 1920s and 30s, the venue was a massive draw for military bands and tea dances, with crowds often stretching down the promenade to the pier. It served as a community hub through the decades, even hosting wartime appeals by figures like Edwina Mountbatten. A charming local tradition saw a red carpet laid across the road from the nearby Connaught Hotel specifically for visiting conductors to walk to their performances. In recent years, the Bandstand has transitioned from a pure performance space into a commercial landmark, housing local staples like Makcari’s Coffee Lounge. While a major restoration was completed in the late 1990s, the structure currently faces significant challenges from "concrete cancer" due to its harsh marine environment. Local efforts and government funding bids continue to focus on preserving this Grade II listed landmark for future generations.
