The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury is a premier regional venue named after the city’s famous Elizabethan playwright, Christopher Marlowe. The current building, which opened in 2011 following a £25.6 million redevelopment, features a striking modern design by Keith Williams Architects and was named Theatre of the Year at The Stage Awards in 2022. Its history spans three distinct locations: it began in 1949 in a converted cinema on St Margaret’s Street, moved to a former Odeon Cinema in The Friars in 1984, and was finally demolished to make way for the state-of-the-art facility standing today. This evolution reflects its growth from a local repertory theatre into a major touring hub for West End musicals, opera, and ballet. The venue houses a 1,200-seat Main House with a landmark flytower and the Marlowe Studio, a 150-seat flexible space for contemporary work and youth theatre. Its presence is anchored by the Marlowe Memorial statue outside and "The Marlowe Kit," a 12th-century building nearby that serves as its creative and educational home.
