Overview

The Margate Winter Gardens is a Grade II-listed entertainment venue uniquely excavated into the town's chalk cliffs, opening in 1911 to provide seaside culture without obstructing local sea views. Designed in a Neo-Grecian style, the building originally featured a large concert hall and an open-air amphitheatre, though the latter was later roofed over to create the Queen’s Hall. Throughout the 20th century, it became one of the UK’s premier venues, hosting legendary acts such as The Beatles, Laurel and Hardy, and Dame Vera Lynn, as well as serving as a vital receiving station for approximately 46,000 troops during the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation. Architecturally, the venue is renowned for its stuccoed exterior and remarkably intact internal decorative schemes, which include historic balconies and caryatids with cast-iron balustrades. The main auditorium features a sprung dance floor and a unique proscenium stage with a rear screen that could originally be lowered into the floor. Following decades of use as a hub for music, cabaret, and national political conferences, the venue was forced to close in August 2022 after the previous operators returned the lease to Thanet District Council due to significant repair backlogs and financial pressures. As of February 2026, a major £8 million restoration masterplan led by Westwood One Theatre is underway to revitalise the site as a year-round sustainable hub. The plans include the complete refurbishment of the Main Hall and Queen’s Hall for performances, alongside the addition of a rooftop bar and restaurant with panoramic sea views, a 100-place day nursery, and a vocational drama school. Major works are expected to begin in summer 2026, with the goal of reopening the primary performance spaces to the public by April 2027.
