Deal Castle Interior

Overview
Built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540, Deal Castle was a cornerstone of the "Device" programme—a massive chain of coastal defences meant to repel a feared Catholic invasion. Strategically positioned to guard the Downs anchorage in Kent, the fort cost over £27,000 and was constructed using stone scavenged from local monasteries dissolved during the Reformation. Architecturally, the castle is famous for its "Tudor Rose" floor plan, featuring a central circular keep enveloped by six inner and six outer bastions. This symmetrical, low-profile design was specifically engineered for artillery warfare, offering 66 firing positions across multiple tiers and a dark, subterranean passageway known as "The Rounds" for close-quarters defence. Though it saw its most intense action during a Civil War siege in 1648, the castle evolved over the centuries into a prestigious residence for its Captains before returning to duty as a WWII observation post. Today, it is managed by English Heritage, standing as one of the most complete and visually striking examples of Tudor military engineering in England.
