High Rocks is a striking outcrop of Ardingly Sandstone on the outskirts of Royal Tunbridge Wells, featuring cliffs that soar up to 12 metres high. Formed over 140 million years ago, the site is famous for its "honeycombed" weathering and deep vertical fissures known as gulls. Visitors can explore these formations via a series of elevated bridges that interconnect the summits, offering views down into the narrow stone chasms. The site’s history spans millennia, serving as a Middle Stone Age camp and later an Iron Age hillfort used to resist Roman advances. It transitioned into a leisure destination in the 17th century after a visit from King James II, eventually becoming a popular Victorian pleasure garden complete with tea rooms and gambling halls. Centuries of visitors have left their mark through historic graffiti, including a famous 1702 poem carved into the rock face. Today, High Rocks is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a protected monument, managed alongside a traditional inn and wedding venue. It remains a premier destination for rock climbing and is a key stop on the Spa Valley Railway, where heritage steam trains regularly deliver tourists directly to the foot of the crags.
