Overview

St Margaret’s Church in Horsmonden is a Grade I listed medieval building uniquely situated nearly two miles from the modern village centre. Originally founded around 1100, the current sandstone structure largely dates to the 14th century under the direction of rector Henry de Grofhurst. Its isolated, rural setting amidst orchards and farmyards makes it one of the most atmospheric "hidden" churches in Kent. The interior is noted for its exceptional historical treasures, most notably the Grofhurst Brass, a magnificent 14th-century monumental engraving of the priest in his vestments. Other curiosities include a 1703 "spider" chandelier and a memorial to John Read, the local inventor of the stomach pump and the circular oast house. Though a German V1 flying bomb shattered the original medieval glass in 1944, it was replaced by vibrant modern windows designed by Rosemary Everett. The church also holds a strong literary connection, with several memorials and graves belonging to the Austen family, relatives of the novelist Jane Austen. Today, it remains an active place of worship and a popular site for walkers exploring the Weald. Its 70-foot western tower serves as a prominent local landmark, visible across the surrounding High Weald landscape.
