Camber Castle

Description

Camber Castle is a 16th-century fortification near Camber, East Sussex, built between 1512 and 1514 under Henry VIII as part of a coastal defense system. Designed by Sir Henry Wynde, it was intended to protect the port of Rye from invasion. The castle featured a polygonal shape and strong artillery defenses. However, as the nearby river silted up and Rye's port declined, the castle lost its strategic importance. By the 17th century, it was in disrepair and ceased military use. Today, the castle is a Grade I listed ruin, managed by English Heritage, and remains a historical site for visitors interested in Tudor defense architecture.
