Overview
Built in the 1760s for the politician Lord Holland, Kingsgate Castle was originally designed as the stable block for his neighboring estate, Holland House. Lord Holland envisioned the structure as a romanticized, mock-Edwardian castle, naming the site to commemorate the 1683 landing of King Charles II at the bay below. While it fell into disrepair during the 19th century, it was extensively restored and expanded around 1900 by Lord Avebury, who transformed the ruins into a grand residence. The architecture is characterized by its flint-faced walls, crenellated parapets, and stone-dressed mullioned windows. While much of the present structure dates to the early 20th-century restoration, the prominent large round tower survives from the original 18th-century build. Its striking position atop the white chalk cliffs provides a dramatic backdrop to Kingsgate Bay, an area famous for its sea caves and secluded sandy beach. During the 1920s and 30s, the castle operated as a fashionable hotel, but it was converted into 32 private residential apartments in 1954. Today, the building remains a Grade II-listed private estate. Although it is not open to the public for tours, it remains one of the most photographed landmarks on the Thanet coastline and is easily viewed from the Viking Coastal Trail.
