Overview

Built on the clifftops of Broadstairs, the North Foreland Lighthouse marks the vital junction between the Dover Strait and the Thames Estuary. While the site has featured warning lights since 1499, the first permanent wooden tower was erected in 1636. After that structure was destroyed by fire, the current octagonal tower was built in 1691 using brick, stone, and flint. Originally just 12 meters tall and powered by an open coal fire, the tower was heightened in 1793 and again in 1890 to reach its current height of 85 feet. The lighthouse holds a unique place in maritime history as the site of several technological milestones. In 1872, it became one of the first in the world to be electrically powered following experiments by scientist Michael Faraday. More significantly, on November 26, 1998, North Foreland became the last manned lighthouse in the UK to be automated. This historic transition was marked by a ceremony presided over by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, effectively ending the era of the traditional lighthouse keeper in Britain. Today, the Grade II-listed structure remains a fully operational aid to navigation managed by Trinity House. It features a white-and-red light that flashes five times every 20 seconds and is visible for 19 nautical miles, though engineering works in early 2026 are set to permanently adjust its range slightly. While the tower itself is private and closed to the public, the two attached former keepers' cottages are available for holiday rentals, and the iconic landmark is clearly visible from the Viking Coastal Trail.
