Overview

The Royal Victoria Pavilion is a Grade II listed landmark in Ramsgate, originally opened on June 29, 1904, by Princess Louise. Designed by architect Stanley Davenport Adshead, it was built in just six weeks to serve as a grand concert hall and assembly rooms. The building was named in honor of Queen Victoria, who had spent much of her childhood in the town. Its design was heavily inspired by the French Classical style, specifically Marie Antoinette’s Little Theatre at Versailles. After decades of use as a cinema, dance hall, and casino, the pavilion fell into a state of dereliction and was added to the Victorian Society's "at risk" register. It was saved by a £4.5 million restoration project and reopened in August 2017 as a JD Wetherspoon pub. Spanning 11,000 square feet, it is now the largest pub in the United Kingdom, featuring a grand imperial staircase, a wrap-around mezzanine, and a prominent curved mansard roof that dominates the seafront. As of January 2026, the pavilion remains a central social hub, offering a vast ground-floor terrace and a first-floor roof terrace with panoramic views of the Ramsgate Sands and the Royal Harbour. The interior honors its heritage through local artwork and historical displays, while modern upgrades have ensured full accessibility, including a dedicated "Changing Places" facility. It stands as a premier example of Edwardian seaside architecture successfully repurposed for the 21st century.
