Titchfield Abbey

Overview
Titchfield Abbey was established in 1222 by Peter des Roches, the Bishop of Winchester, for the Premonstratensian "white canons." Despite being a minor religious house, its strategic location near the coast made it a significant royal stopping point. It hosted King Henry V before his 1415 French campaign and served as the venue for the 1445 wedding of King Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou. The monastery's life ended in 1537 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Granted to Sir Thomas Wriothesley, the abbey was converted into a grand Tudor mansion called Place House, with the church's nave repurposed as a gatehouse. This new residence welcomed monarchs like Elizabeth I and Charles I, and its connection to William Shakespeare's patron, the third Earl, suggests potential early performances of his plays there. The mansion was abandoned and ruined in 1781 but is now a protected Scheduled Ancient Monument cared for by English Heritage and open to the public.
