Overview
The Pantiles is a historic Georgian colonnaded walkway in Royal Tunbridge Wells, renowned for its elegant architecture and boutique charm. Originally developed in the early 17th century following the discovery of the iron-rich Chalybeate Spring, it quickly became a fashionable spa retreat for high society. The area takes its name from the square, clay "pan-tiles" used to pave the promenade in 1700 after Princess Anne donated funds to improve the slippery ground. During the 18th century, the celebrated dandy Richard "Beau" Nash transformed the area into a premier social hub, establishing strict protocols for the elite who gathered there to "take the waters." This golden era solidified the Pantiles as a centre for gambling, music, and refined leisure. While the original ceramic tiles were mostly replaced by stone in 1793, the iconic Upper and Lower Walks and cast-iron pillars remain as a testament to its Regency-era grandeur. Today, the Pantiles is a vibrant pedestrianised district home to over 70 independent shops, galleries, and cafes. It serves as the town's cultural heart, hosting popular events like the seasonal "Jazz on the Pantiles" concerts and regular artisan markets. Visitors can still sample the spring water from traditional "Dippers" at the northern end, maintaining a link to the site’s 400-year-old origins as a healing spa.
