Westgate Gardens is a stunning 11-acre riverside park in Canterbury, situated alongside the River Stour and the 600-year-old Westgate Towers. As one of England’s oldest public open spaces, it sits atop ancient Roman foundations and features a 14th-century defensive bastion built into the city wall. The gardens were officially gifted to the city for public use in 1936 by Stephen and Catherine Williamson, the latter of whom was Canterbury’s first female mayor. The park’s history is marked by a unique 16th-century legal battle where local citizens used force—and strategic bribery—to reclaim the land from the church. Today, it serves as a peaceful retreat and a gateway to the larger Westgate Parks network. It is a focal point for heritage and nature, housing the Tower House and various war memorials, including the Burma Star and Italy Star monuments. Visitors are often drawn to the gardens' unique landmarks, such as the massive 200-year-old Oriental Plane tree that has partially grown over a Victorian iron bench. Other notable sights include the underwater Alluvia sculptures in the riverbed and a Romanesque archway made from medieval abbey ruins. The gardens are free to visit and are a primary launch point for traditional punting tours through the city.
