Whitstable Harbour

Overview
Established in 1832, Whitstable Harbour was originally built to serve the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway—the world’s first regular steam-powered passenger line. It functioned as a vital industrial link, importing coal for Canterbury and exporting local grain. While the railway eventually faded, the harbour remained the beating heart of the town’s maritime identity, serving as the primary base for the historic Whitstable Oyster Company. The harbour is unique for its "Native Oysters," a delicacy harvested from the local beds since Roman times. During the Victorian era, the port supported one of the largest fishing fleets in Europe, and that legacy continues today. Unlike many modernised marinas, it has resisted over-development, maintaining its status as a working commercial port where fishing boats still land daily catches of whelks, crabs, and shellfish. Today, the harbour is a vibrant blend of industry and tourism, defined by its iconic black-tarred timber huts. These sheds, which once stored fishing gear, now house a thriving artisan market and fresh seafood stalls. Owned and managed by the local council as a "trust port," it remains a community asset where visitors can watch local fishermen at work while exploring independent shops and galleries along the quay.
